About 1in8b
1in8b.app is a free life simulator: you are born as one of the babies being born right now, and live that one life.
What 1in8b is
A browser game you can play without signing up or downloading anything. One life takes about an hour, lived one year at a time, and you can pause or speed up. It is available in English, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Indonesian.
1in8b.app and 1in8b.life
1in8b.life is a game by a solo developer in Korea built on the same idea. 1in8b.app is a separate, independent project and has no connection to it. If you are looking for that game, it is at 1in8b.life.
What we care about
Real statistics, shown with their sources. Hard things (illness, poverty, early death) happen at their real rates, without detail and never as a reward. No borders and no flags. Every life is free; an optional Keepsake pack helps pay for the project.
Who it is for
Anyone aged 15 and up who has wondered how different their life would be if they had been born somewhere else. Many people play one life for the story, then play again to compare. Teachers use it to start a conversation about global inequality: two students born in the same second can end up with very different lives, and the life record shows why.
Where the numbers come from
Births, life tables and fertility come from UN World Population Prospects 2024; income, schooling, cities and health from the World Bank; work from the ILO. Each figure uses the latest year available. The How it works page explains how these numbers decide your birth, each year of your life and the effect of your choices, and lists every source.
What we keep about you
Nothing, unless you choose to. Your lives and settings stay in your browser. You never need an account to play; if you save a life or buy a Keepsake pack, your email becomes your account, with no password. The Privacy page lists everything we handle and how to delete it.
How it is made
An independent project, paid for by players who choose to buy a Keepsake pack. Every life is free to play. When the UN or the World Bank publishes new figures, we update the data and note the version, so a shared life still replays the same way.
